It SOUNDS like Matt Kemp MIGHT have taken a step forward

The report Don Mattingly got from Camelback Ranch was that Matt Kemp had 13 plate appearances today, going 5-for-9 with four walks. How such things are gauged isn’t entirely clear, since there are no actual GAMES going on at CBR until the Arizona Instructional League actually kicks off in a couple of weeks, but Donnie did say this whole thing was recorded on video. It’s not even clear whom Kemp was hitting against — Donnie said he didn’t ask, but that he’ll try to remember to do so in subsequent days. He did say he knew it wasn’t Matt Magill but that it could have been Onelki Garcia.

This was Kemp’s first day of actual activity at CBR after his more formal minor league rehabilitation assignment was ended after five games at advanced Single-A Rancho Cucamonga — he was hitless in 18 at-bats — when the California League regular season concluded on Monday.

Still no indication of when Kemp will be activated, but Monday would be a good guess. Mattingly has officially ruled out any possibility of it happening during this weekend’s three-game series in Cincinnati.

  1. I once slapped Clayton Kershaw around, going 4 for 4 with six RBI. Game controls were set to “easy” on MLB 2012: the Show. Does that count for anything? :)

  2. …I’m afraid my prediction is we don’t see Matt Kemp on the field in uniform the rest of the season…these reports of his “rehab” are very strange and not very encouraging, particularly paired with his struggles (last few games played excepted) when he was even on the field this year…I love the guy and want him back but I suspect it won’t be until Camelback in 2014…
